In June 2023 the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, launched a new policy brief under ‘Our Common Agenda’, highlighting the critical issue of ‘Information Integrity on Digital Platforms’. The rapid advancement of new technology brings a host of benefits and opportunities, but also significant threats. One of these is the growing concern over the integrity of information disseminated on digital platforms. With the advent of technologies such as generative AI, the dangers of misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech on digital platforms are more alarming than ever.
RIA is grateful for the opportunity to comment on the policy brief, which was submitted to the UN on the 18 December 2023. RIA’s input include discussions around:
- commitment to information integrity
- respect for human rights
- support for independent media, and
- strengthened research and data access, among others.
