Zara Schroeder is a dynamic professional with a Master’s degree in Public Sociology and Anthropology from Stellenbosch University. Her work specialises in AI ethics, social impact and gender equality. With a strong background in research, project coordination and stakeholder engagement, Zara's work explores the intersection of technology and social issues, particularly in the Global South.
Her current research focuses on AI’s role in the spread of information disorders and strategies to mitigate related risks and inform policy. She is also involved in the Africa Just AI project, examining gender and AI harms in Africa.
At RIA, Zara coordinated research for the African Observatory on Responsible AI, managing collaborations with regional partners. She also contributed to the Global Index on Responsible AI, a tool assessing AI's ethical implementation in 120 countries, managing data from 139 global hubs. Additionally, Zara has conducted risk analysis for Generative AI applications in collaboration with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Zara’s extensive experience in South Africa’s NGO sector includes leading a social media campaign at Sonke Gender Justice to combat gender-based violence. She has developed expertise in research, advocacy, policy development and risk assessment, driving impactful social change through cross-sector collaborations
