Data, disinformation and democracy

In 2024, over 60 countries will hold national elections. And for those in South Africa, the month of June will forever be defined by the historical elections that resulted in a Government of National Unity, 30 years after our first transitional government. But despite what our IEC-accredited staff members found to be a free and fair election in their Elections Observation Report, certain issues continue to undermine democratic strides. Beyond budget cuts and imperfect planning, disinformation and online propaganda are among the largest threats to public politics. This is precisely why this organisation continues to call for legalised public-interest access to platform data for researchers covering elections. It is also why this month’s newsletter is dedicated to data, disinformation and the impact of digital technology on democracy.
