Dissecting intersectionality and digital access, and a new way of thinking about data

2024, the year of the election, is in full swing, and our researchers are carefully monitoring and analysing how the use, misuse and even abuse of AI is playing out in elections in Africa. Yesterday, RIA Senior Research Associate Dr Scott Timcke delivered a talk at the University of Florida titled: AI and Democracy on the Continent. If you missed the lecture, keep an eye on our social media for more about that presentation.

In this newsletter, be sure to read the two interesting blogs on AI by our research fellow, Liz Orembo. She recently moderated a panel discussion on AI in elections in Africa with panellists representing all regions of the continent. The insights of that discussion are summed up in the blog. She also offered us a sneak preview of some interesting work comparing and analysing the different AI regulation frameworks emerging around the world.
