Welcome to our November newsletter. We are excited to share that Daniel Motaung has joined the RIA team. For those not familiar with his name, Daniel made headlines for blowing the whistle on Facebook’s exploitative labour practices for content moderators in Africa.
His story highlights at least one aspect of the dark side of big tech both in and for Africa. If you read nothing else today, read his story.
Other highlights this month include a workshop on data, AI, and elections in Africa hosted by RIA in collaboration with International Media Support and SIDA. The workshop brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including electoral experts, diplomats, African media, data scientists, and African digital rights organisations. It sought to kickstart a process of dialogue and collaboration in support of African democracy in the time of AI.
