Building the internet Africa needs

  • RIA Newsletter

We are pleased to present a shorter newsletter as part of our new communications strategy. Keep an eye on our social media platforms and website for info like past or upcoming events, which are no longer in the newsletter. If you have feedback on what you want to see more of, or never want to see again, please share it with us.

October was an eventful month for RIA, with many opportunities for our staff to forward the African agenda for more inclusive digital governance. We were at the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Kyoto, Japan, in the first week of October. This provided a space to engage with global players such as the United Nations Secretary General’s Envoy on Technology, to further discussions around greater African participation in international governance agenda setting and decision making, and to create an enabling environment for more just AI outcomes.

The IGF was not our only opportunity to promote equitable and intentionally responsible approaches to using AI. RIA was also represented at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Grand Challenges Meeting in Dakar, Senegal. We partnered with the Foundation to support this year’s challenge: Catalyzing Equitable AI Use. The critical message from RIA at this event was that Africans need to drive their own AI agenda.
