RIA submits input on UN Global AI Governance mechanisms

The United Nations is currently advancing an important initiative to establish two new mechanisms for global artificial intelligence governance: an Independent International Scientific Panel on AI and a Global Dialogue on AI Governance. Led by the UN Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies, under the guidance of co-facilitators from Costa Rica and Spain, this process follows the adoption of the Global Digital Compact.

The UN has opened consultations with Member States, observers, and stakeholders across sectors to shape the terms of reference and operational modalities for these mechanisms. This includes both an informal virtual consultation and a call for written submissions. The aim is to ensure broad and inclusive participation, drawing input from governments, institutions, civil society, the private sector, and individuals.

Research ICT Africa has made a submission to this process, providing recommendations on the structural and operational aspects of the Panel and Dialogue, their potential impact on global AI governance, and ways to strengthen their effectiveness within the UN system.
