Kenya’s new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy (2025–2030) positions the country as a regional leader in AI innovation, research, and commercialisation. But how well does it embed justice, equity, and inclusion into its vision for digital transformation?
In this latest Africa Just AI country policy analysis, authors Jackie Akello and Pria Chetty apply the Just AI Framework of Inquiry to assess how Kenya’s AI Strategy aligns with principles of human rights, democratic governance, and sustainability.
The analysis recognises Kenya’s efforts to promote ethical, inclusive, and sustainable AI, including the integration of human rights protections and commitments to environmental responsibility. However, it also identifies key areas where the Strategy could go further — including ensuring equitable distribution of AI benefits, embedding collective data rights, and strengthening democratic oversight and ecological accountability.
By decoding Kenya’s AI Strategy through a justice-oriented lens, this analysis contributes to RIA’s broader Africa Just AI Lab series, which examines how AI policies across the continent can be harnessed for the public good rather than deepening existing inequalities.
