Naila Govan-Vassen promoted to Deputy Director

Research ICT Africa (RIA) is pleased to announce the promotion of Naila Govan-Vassen to Deputy Director, following Dr Araba Sey’s decision to step down from the role. Govan-Vassen’s appointment marks an important step in strengthening RIA’s executive leadership and positioning the organisation for its next phase of growth.

Govan-Vassen has been a cornerstone of RIA for the past seven years, most recently serving as Operations Director. Over this time, she has played a central role in shaping RIA’s governance frameworks, operational systems, and institutional effectiveness. Her leadership has been instrumental in strengthening relationships with funders, overseeing complex multi-country research programmes, and ensuring organisational resilience in a rapidly evolving digital policy environment.

In her new role as Deputy Director, Govan-Vassen will take on a more strategic portfolio, working closely with Executive Director Pria Chetty and Research Director Kola Ijasan to advance RIA’s long-term sustainability, innovation agenda, and institutional growth. This includes deepening strategic partnerships, strengthening organisational systems, and supporting the alignment between RIA’s research, policy engagement, and operational priorities.

“Naila’s appointment significantly strengthens RIA’s executive structure at a time when the organisation is expanding both its research ambition and its institutional footprint,” said Pria Chetty, RIA Executive Director. “Her deep institutional knowledge and ability to translate vision into practice make her uniquely positioned to co-lead and ensure RIA remains resilient, effective, and impactful.”

Reflecting on her new role, Govan-Vassen emphasised continuity alongside renewal: “In this new role, I’m excited to contribute at a more strategic level to strengthen the organisation’s foundations, supporting innovation, and helping to position RIA for sustainable growth while remaining true to our mission and values.”

RIA extends its sincere appreciation to Dr Araba Sey for her leadership and contributions during her tenure as Deputy Director, and looks forward to this next chapter under a strengthened executive team.
