Public hearings on the cost to communicate in South Africa

The South African Parliamenatry Portfolio Committee on Communications has embarked on a series of public hearings on the general cost to communicate in South Africa.

In July, the second phase of this public participation initiative got underway in Soweto (Johannesburg), following the first engagement held in November last year in Parliament in Cape Town.  RIA’s presentation by Executive Director Alison Gillwald shows that while prepaid mobile voice prices in SA continue to perform poorly compared to the rest of the continent, they perform somewhat better on data pricing – especially in the high usage prepaid and postpaid mobile broadband markets. But, in the prepaid lower-use broadband baskets, where affordability is likely to be the biggest issue, it performs less well.
