Alex Comninos (MSocSci, International Relations, University of Cape Town) is Researcher focusing on Africa’s readiness to beneficially use artificial intelligence.
Alex is an ICT researcher who has published research on various topics including artificial intelligence, human rights and the internet, internet governance, cybersecurity, intermediary liability, mobile banking, and African political economy. Alex is a member of the Association for Progressive Communications (APC) and has worked, consulted, and conducted research for NGOs including the Open Technology Institute, the Association for Progressive Communications, the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) Global Partners Digital, Freedom House, and SANGOnet. He has also consulted for international organisations such as the OSCE/ODIHR, NEPAD, and the World Bank. Alex has on both the Freedom on the Net Report as the South Africa analyst, and on the Ranking Digital Rights as a jurisdictional analyst focusing on MTN.
Alex is a member of the Association for Progressive Communications, the Kenyan ICT Action Network, and is a the IGF Best Practice Forum on Big Data, Internet of Things, and Artificial Intelligence. Alex is an alumnus of the African School on Internet Governance, the Managing Global Governance Advanced Training for Young Professionals, the German Federal Foreign Office’s International Futures Training for International Diplomats, and is also an Amazon Web Services Certified Cloud Practitioner

Alex has returned to Research ICT Africa after having cut his teeth in ICT policy research when he served as Researcher and Network Coordinator in 2008-2009.
