The Global Index on Responsible Artificial Intelligence (Global Index) has received another recognition of its potential to support in the realisation of critical development challenges facing the world. The Global Index is a project of Research ICT Africa and Data for Development Network (D4D) which is funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and AI4D Africa

Early in May 2023 the Global Index was selected as one of the top 100 solutions for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence (IRCAI). This list of top 100 projects solving global problems connects the application and regulation of AI to the 17 United Nations (UN) SDGs.

The Global Index on Responsible AI has been identified by IRCAI as a project that will address the following SGDs:

  • SDG 5: Gender Equality
  • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
  • SDG 10: Reduced Inequality
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • SDG 16: Peace and Justice Strong Institutions
  • SDG 17: Partnerships to Achieve the 17 Goals

UNESCO’s International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence

IRCAI is a UNESCO centre in artificial intelligence research, with objectives on research, advocacy, capacity-building and dissemination of information about AI. The UN led the process to co-develop the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015, which place measurable targets for a more sustainable and improved future for everyone in the world by 2030.

From 2022 to 2023, IRCAI has hosted the second cohort of international projects in AI and SDGs, providing synthesised evidence on the efforts of various entities such as multinational corporations, nongovernmental organisations, universities, and startups engaged in developing AI projects associated with the realisation of the SDGs. IRCAI is committed to supporting the achievement of the SDGs by enhancing the visibility of the most prominent international AI research, advanced technologies and computation that have the potential to advance progress.

Presentation of Global Top 100 International List of AI Solutions in SDGs & launch of the IRCAI 2023 Call

On the 4th of May 2023, IRCAI hosted a Presentation of the Global Top 100 International List of AI Solutions in SDGs and Launch of the IRCAI 2023 Call. The event was to showcase the work these teams have done, and to present how they are using AI to address the SDGs.

The event was attended by esteemed experts and dignitaries including Ambassador Boštjan Malovrh (Permanent Representative of the Republic of Slovenia to the United Nations in New York), Igor Papič (Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation of the Republic of Slovenia), Tawfik Jelassi (Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, UNESCO), Tanja Miškova (Ambassador-at-Large for Water Diplomacy, Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia).

With the IRCAI Global Top 100 2022 report released only a few days ago, the Global Index team is thrilled to be included, as this is the second recognition the project has received since its inception in 2021. Last year, the Global Index was selected for the Scale-up Programme (SCUP) of the Paris Peace Forum. The programme is tailored to progress and enhance the profile and impact of selected projects such as the Global Index and it involves close collaboration with world-renown mentors who guide and support our team. The SCUP has taken the Global Index on Responsible AI to new heights, and we are excited to see the promising impact the IRCAI award has for the project!
