Public Access to Reliable Information During Elections in Africa

This project aims to improve public access to credible election-related information, through combating disinformation during elections while championing quality journalism that serves the public interest. Building on previous collaboration, International Media Support and Research ICT Africa engage a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including media professionals, data scientists, academics, regulators and election officials, to explore the multifaceted impacts of disinformation and the importance of unified approaches in tackling it.

Working in Tanzania, Mozambique, Ghana and Namibia, the project maps country-specific threats to disinformation, identify key stakeholders and evaluate ongoing measures to address election disinformation. This tailored analysis ensures context-specific strategies that respond effectively to the unique challenges faced in each country.

The project also promotes cooperation among media organisations, civil society groups, regulatory authorities, data scientists, researchers and other stakeholders, to strengthen coalitions, facilitate collective action and improve access to reliable election information. The project seeks to show the ways in which enhanced public awareness and strong collaborative engagement during elections, can reinforce democratic principles.
