Why ‘Just’ AI?
We’ve spent the past 3 years engaging deeply with this challenge: asking what it means to govern AI in ways that are truly just for Africa. Through our research, we’ve seen a pressing need for a more deliberate and contextualised approach to AI governance; one that allows African countries to shift from being mere consumers of AI tech to becoming co-creators of AI systems that reflect our development priorities, democratic values and lived experiences.
This month’s newsletter unpacks this approach to just governance, not only in AI, but also across our efforts in data governance, the digital economy, and information integrity.
Some highlights from our last month of delivering research through a justice-oriented lens, include:

- Policy paper, Cross-border data flows in Africa: An analysis of the alignment with AfCFTA.
