RIA’s senior researcher, Shamira Ahmed, participated in the Africa Law Tech Festival 2021: Digital Policy for Economic Growth. She made an input about AI ethics focusing on gender bias.
Gender bias emerges due to data limitations, badly designed algorithms and lack of gender diversity in AI workforces where AI systems are used or deployed, Ahmed argued. AI is not neutral, it is prone to adopting existing biases in whatever ecosystem it is employed, where it may even amplify biases.
There is no simple answer to reigning in these biases she argued. However, she calls for more diversity in workplaces that develop AI systems as well as a work culture that encourages women to be product leads and data scientists, while generally promoting women’s voices in AI-based solutions.
