Thursday, 6 May 2021 from 13:00-14:30 SAST

To fully untap the value of data, governments must ensure that it is used in the public interest while protecting the rights of citizens who are increasingly becoming data subjects. South Africa’s Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies recently published a Draft National Data and Cloud Policy for public comment, which is due by 18 May 2021.

The Draft Policy seeks to chart a course for government action on data and cloud computing as a potential economic driver. It outlines interventions for policy issues including, but not limited to digital infrastructure, access to data and cloud services, data protection, localisation and cross-border data transfer, cybersecurity, competition and research.

To help diverse stakeholders think about the implications of this fast changing field and prepare constructive responses to the Draft Policy, Research ICT Africa is hosting a webinar on 6 May 2021, from 13:00-14:30 (SAST). With international and national experts lined up, the discussion aims to unpack the different elements of the Draft Policy and its potential implications.
