Digital Rights and Inclusion
On Monday 15 March RIA’s Senior Fellow, Gabriella Razzano, presented on the intersections between data, artificial intelligence (AI) and privacy in a workshop session in partnership with the Association of Progressive Communications. Our presentation was informed by the emerging results of our AI4D project, which is contextualising both data and AI governance issues in the African region.
The workshop is part of a series of academic courses that the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria is hosting in partnership with the Paradigm Initiative as part of its Digital Rights and Inclusion Media Fellowship Programme. 30 fellows were selected for this year’s fellowship from across the region.
Some of the specific data risks identified by Razzano in her presentation include:
- Big data (for AI) often includes personal data
- Exclusion – under representation in data sets
- Bias – over representation in data, or inadequately represented

Africa Open Data Day
Staying with data as a theme, Oarabile Mudongo, Media Democracy Fund Research Fellow at RIA, was a panelist in a webinar hosted by Paradigm Initiative to commemorate Africa Open Data Day, which took place on 6 March 2021. The webinar explored the topic, “Promoting Transparent COVID-19 Data Governance in Africa“.
