Digital migration in South Africa stalled by vested interests, Gillwald tells SABC

Thandeka Gqubule-Mbeki of the SABC’s weekly program, Economic Unbound, talked to RIA’s Dr Alison Gillwald in an effort to understand South Africa’s digital migration failure.

Gillwald chaired South Africa’s digital migration task team under minister Ivy Matsape-Casaburri in the early 2000’s when cabinet was advised to move ahead with digital migration standards. However, over the years, both commercial and political vested interests have stalled government policy on digital migration.

Millions of people in South Africa are dependent on free to air broadcasting due to lack of access to the internet, which makes this an important public interest issue, Gillwald argued.
