Welcoming Shamira Ahmed – RIA’s new senior researcher, economist

We’re excited to announce that Shamira Ahmed is joining Research ICT Africa as Senior Researcher, Economist.

Shamira will work closely with RIA’s pricing team to undertake supply-side analysis of policy outcomes, specifically market, competition, financial and pricing analysis. She will be responsible for all aspects of RIA’s research projects including platform economy, digital work, e-trade and taxation of digital goods.

Our  main goal is to conduct public-interest research on the digital economy and society that responds to national, regional and continental needs. It provides relevant stakeholders with the information and analysis required to develop flexible and adaptive policies and regulation to deal with an increasingly complex and dynamic digital environment. Our network helps us contribute to the gathering and analysis of data and indicators to establish a repository of knowledge for furthering research and digital governance.

Shamira joins RIA from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) where she was an  Assistant Director. She has experience in both the private and public sectors, working on a wide variety of research projects that range from application of behavioural economics theories in order to determine consumer choice architecture to strategic implementation of international trade agreements in order to enhance South Africa’s national economic development policies.

She has a keen interest in sustainable development economics, policy analysis, globalization, digitalization and structural economic change in low  and middle income countries. Shamira is an Australia Awards Africa Scholarship recipient and completed her Masters Degree in International and Development Economics from the Australian National University, Shamira also has a BCom Honours in International Trade and Finance and a BCom in Economics and Econometrics, both from the University of Johannesburg.

Shamira brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of econometrics, regulation and global governance from her time at DTI.
